Compliance is now the second largest hiring function in crypto after engineering. With the FCA's new cryptoasset authorisation window open and MiCA fully in force, demand for senior compliance leaders is rising, and so is pay. This guide brings together current UK salary benchmarks for crypto compliance roles and what drives them.
Three changes have pushed compliance up the hiring list.
Published crypto specific salary data is still limited, so the most useful reference points are adjacent regulated sectors that crypto firms compete with for talent. The figures below are base salaries from public 2026 benchmarks.
Source: FD Capital, UK MLRO Salary 2026. Globally, CryptoJobsList reports an average crypto Head of Compliance salary of about $110,000, with the top 10% above $200,000, though that figure blends many markets and seniority levels.
In our experience, five factors explain most of the variation:
Use bank and payments benchmarks as the floor for senior roles, not the ceiling. Firms preparing an FCA application should budget for a premium for candidates with direct authorisation experience, and should start the search early. The February 2027 deadline means many firms are now competing for the same small pool at the same time.
Token or equity can close a gap, but most senior compliance candidates weight base salary and stability more heavily than engineers do. Be clear about the firm's capital position and regulatory roadmap.
Public benchmarks for comparable regulated firms put MLRO base salaries between £70,000 and £180,000, depending on firm size and complexity. Crypto firms preparing for FCA authorisation often pay towards the upper end to attract candidates with licensing experience.
Not usually at base. Major banks still pay more for MLRO roles. Crypto firms tend to compete on scope, ownership and equity.
Before you start the application. The FCA will assess the people as much as the paperwork, and a strong compliance lead shapes the application itself.
